- 1998 - Norcal Environmental Student Network established as part of a California Department of Education grant supporting the Sharing Our Globe high school camp out conference. The original mission of NESN was to serve as a communications network and sponsor of inter-school activities for students from the various high school environmental and outdoor clubs in central and northern California.
- 2001 - Norcal Environmental Student Network granted tax exempt 510 (c)(3) status from the Internal Revenue Service.
- 2003 - Norcal Environmental Student Network partners with the Clean Water Team of the State Water Resources Control Board to develop and implement a water quality monitoring training program for high school students.
- 2006 - Following passage of SB70 (Career Technical Education Initiative) NESN partners with the California Community Colleges Environmental Training Centers to create and administer the Environmental Career Preparation Program. This program provided services and augmented instruction primarily to high school environmental academies and pathway programs, many granting community college units.
- 2009 - Norcal Environmental Student Network partners with the California Department of Parks and Recreation and the United States Army Corps of Engineers (Sacramento and San Francisco districts) to develop and implement a program of training of high school students to collect, process, and create data files using geospatial technology.
- 2013 - California Community Colleges Chancellors Office announces reorganization of the Economic and Workforce Development Program including elimination of the Environmental Training Centers effective June 30.
- 2013 - Norcal Environmental Student Network leadership makes the decision to restructure the organization and rename it as California Environmental Technology Education Network to reflect the statewide service area and evolution from a student club based program to one focused on providing augmented academic instruction and career preparation experiences. Organizational change effective on July 1.
